Cancun Travel Guides
Founded in 1970, the resort city of Cancún is in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, on the northeast coast of the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea. The city’s name is likely derived from the Mayan words “kaan kun.” Its meaning is the source of some debate, but it perhaps has something to do with enchanted snakes, which were an important part of Mayan culture. Today, this vacation hot spot is known for its beaches, nightlife and resorts for visitors of all ages. While you’re there, be sure to visit Isla Mujeres, famous for its sea turtles and coral reefs, and just a 20-minute ferry ride from Cancún.
Where to Stay
Hotels in Cancún are located in two separate areas. First, there’s downtown Cancún, which is known in Spanish as “Ciudad Cancún.” This is where many of Cancún’s permanent residents live, and where you will find more budget-friendly hotels and restaurants. Most visitors stay in the main tourist area, Isla Cancún, which is also called the hotel zone, or Zona Hotelera. This zone is 15 miles long and is just off the mainland, connected by causeways on each end, with the Nichupté Lagoon between the hotel zone and the mainland. There, you’ll have your choice of hotels for any size budget, including all-inclusive resorts, top chain hotels and rental homes for the whole family. For more of a small-town, beachy feel, the 5-mile-long Isla Mujeres also has approximately 75 hotels to choose from.
Located in Cancún, Quintana Roo, Cancún International Airport (CUN) is one of the busiest airports in the Caribbean and is considered the gateway to “Mundo Maya,” which translates in English to “Mayan World.” Established in 1974, the same year the city of Cancún began its tourism project with the opening of its first hotels, Cancún International Airport has two parallel runways that service over 23 million passengers per year. The airport has flights and departures from both major airlines and charter planes, and offers restaurants, rental car services, hotel transportation, a VIP lounge and more.
Top Things to Do
If you love the beach, then Cancún is the perfect resort town for you! The top beaches (“playas” in Spanish) include Playa Tortugas, Playa Langosta and Playa Linda. Be sure to check out all the amazing activities you can do under and over the water, like snorkeling, catamaran cruising and parasailing. There are sights and landmarks aplenty, with the most popular tourist attractions being the Tulum Avenue walking area, Torre Escenica observation deck, El Rey Ruins and Scorpion’s Temple. Shopping, restaurants and nightlife abound, and you’ll have your pick of adventures — the Zona Hotelera is filled with restaurants of all cuisines, as well as nightclubs that are both indoors and outdoors, where you can dance the night away to your favorite tunes. If you’re venturing to Isla Mujeras, either to stay at a hotel or just for a day trip, you can’t go wrong with a private sailing tour, a deep-sea fishing excursion or a visit to the Tortugranja turtle sanctuary.
If you’re lucky enough to vacation in Cancún, Mexico, then you’re equally lucky to partake of its tropical weather, which remains glorious year-round. June is the hottest month, with an average temperature of 82 degrees, and January is the coldest with a still-balmy 73-degree average. September has the most seasonal rain, but you’ll love taking a swim in July, when the beautiful blue Caribbean Sea averages 84 degrees.
