8 Ways to Spend Time With Mom

You can always buy your mom some chocolate and flowers for Mother’s Day, but a gift of your time and attention will be a true show of your love for her. A date together, bonding over a special activity, will be just as important to you as to her. Here’s a thoughtful gift guide for eight creative ways you can say “I love you” to your mom this Mother’s Day.

Afternoon Tea

Get your pinky fingers up for tea time at a nearby hotel or a local tea shop. Many will offer a whole spread of finger sandwiches and petit fours. Gift your mom a fancy hat she can wear to impress the socialites.

Vintage Clothes Shopping

Research local vintage shops and plan an afternoon of sales and bargain hunting. Probably the real Mother’s Day gift would be to let you mom decide what you should buy for yourself (without arguing). Can’t hurt to let her have her way on this special day.

Home Improvement

Here’s a real DIY Mother’s Day gift idea: My mom adores any show that highlights home improvements, and I’m guessing there are a few others out there. If that sounds like yours, tell her you want to help her sand and finish those chairs she’s been meaning to get to. If you really love her, agree to take her to a home improvement store like Ace Hardware to pick out paint colors. Get into the fun by staging Before and After pics.

Share Family Memories

Pull out the old photo albums and other scrapbooks. Ask your mom to sit and look at these together, and ask her questions to prompt her to share and relive some old memories. You could even tell her some stories she might not remember from your childhood. To document the afternoon together, and for real laughs, recreate some old photos of you and her.

Food Tours

Instead of booking a reservation for dinner, find a tour that will take you to the best spots in Chinatown or food trucks around the city. You’ll learn new spots in your town and have time to walk and chat.

Chocolate Tasting

While wine tastings are common enough, what you really want to do is book a chocolate tour. This is a regular offering I see on Groupon, and if you’re lucky, you have a local chocolate company that offers tours and tastings. This, in my opinion, would be the best Mother’s Day gift!

Craft Class

If your mom’s favorite thing to do on a Saturday afternoon is visit the local craft or fabric store, call them up and inquire about crafting classes. Joann Fabric and Craft Stores and Michaels are a couple of great options. Many will offer workshops that are a great time to bond, meet new friends and learn a skill. If you’d rather stay in, gather your tools and surprise your mom with a set up at home, led by a YouTube video tutorial for a project you can work on together.

You don’t need to buy mom’s love, but it does feel nice to be able to gift her with something nice every once in a while. Shop with Ebates to get Cash Back on every purchase, even gifts.
