After receiving his doctorate in French from Columbia University, Dr. Paul Pimsleur taught at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Ohio State University. While at Ohio State, he researched how individuals learn new languages and established the Listening Center, which facilitated language learning using recorded media. Based on his observation that children acquire language skills without learning formal grammatical rules and structures, he developed the Pimsleur Language Program. The program started with tapes providing instruction in  modern Greek, but soon expanded to include French, Spanish and German. Pimsleur died in 1976, but students around the world still use his method to learn new languages. Now an imprint of Simon & Schuster, the company offers instructional tapes in more than 50 languages.
